Asbestos Surveys

Asbestos Surveys
Complying with SOLAS and flag state requirements
The purpose of an asbestos survey is to determine the asbestos containing materials used within the vessel or platform in compliance with the SOLAS Regulation. The survey consists of several components such as: desk research, site inspection, sampling and a survey report. This can be requested by various parties i.e., Classification Society or Flag State prior to reflagging the vessel. Also, during the purchase process of a new vessel, it can be interesting to conduct an Asbestos Survey prior to taking over the vessel.
The results of the survey will be described in an Asbestos Survey Report. The risk of all asbestos containing materials present in the vessel or platform will be assessed. Depending on what kind of risks are present on the location, professional advice will be given in order to eliminate those risks.
MA-Solutions is also specialized in Asbestos Surveys which can be requested by the Flag State of the Netherlands during new building or reflagging (NSI inspection).
Contamination Survey
During a contamination survey a risk assessment is carried out regarding the current and potential risks which are present on location. Such a survey will be advised in case of reasonable suspicion of an asbestos contamination.
In order to determine the current risk, air measurements will be carried out and the potential risk will be assessed by taking adhesive samples to determine the presence of asbestos fibres in dust. The samples taken will be analysed by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Based on the results of the survey an appropriate advice will be given on how to act further in this specific situation.
