IHM Part II and III

IHM Part II and III

If a ship has reached the end of its (economic) lifetime, it will have to be demolished and recycled. Sustainable ship recycling is a major challenge, in both social and environmental terms. In practice, this is often a hazardous and environmentally damaging job, because of the hazardous materials that are processed in the ship and in its equipment. During the preparatory phase of the decommissioning, a final inventory will be carried out. This inventory consists of three parts:

Part I.     Materials contained in ship structure or equipment
Part II.   Operationally generated wastes, and
Part III.  Stores

This IHM report forms a major source of information for the ship recycling plan and the selection of the ship recycling facility. Together with a SRP (Ship Recycling Plan) and the Ready for Recycling (RfR) certificate the ship can be dismantled safely and controlled.

If an owner decides to send his EU/EEA flagged ship for recycling, he has to send his ship to a ship recycling facility (SRF) which is listed in the EU List of approved ship recycling facilities and apply for a final survey to get the Ready for Recycling (RfR) certificate.
